V BANHMI sits comfortably at the intersection of casual Asian dining and dessert exploration in Nepean’s Marketplace district. While its name highlights the iconic Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, the restaurant offers a broader menu that blends savory street eats with refreshing sweet treats, making it an appealing spot for a varied crowd. The vibe here is laid-back yet lively, with a steady flow of locals dropping in for quick meals or afternoon snacks.

Visitors often come with a hunger for hand-held comfort food—like the original banh mi or vegan ham variants—which are noted for their fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. Though the sandwiches aren’t oversized, they suit a light lunch or pairing alongside an order of deep-fried takoyaki or popcorn chicken. The kitchen also covers a range of Asian rice dishes with homestyle touches, such as Taiwanese satay beef on rice and Hong Kong-style curry chicken, perfect for those looking for a heartier option.

What gives V BANHMI a different rhythm from a typical sandwich shop is its dessert lineup. The shaved ice options—mango with fresh fruit and taro, or taro with lychee jelly—offer a cool, textural contrast to the warm dishes and fit well with lunch or mid-afternoon cravings. The black sesame egg waffle and mango pancake with sundae supreme stand out for those who appreciate Asian-inspired sweets that stray from standard Canadian café fare. These desserts seem to inspire return visits, especially during warmer months.

The atmosphere tends toward casual and functional rather than ornate; the staff is attentive and helpful, especially when answering questions about vegetarian choices or gluten-free options. This attention reflects a neighborhood mindset—familiar faces returning for regular lunches, takeout runs, or a relaxed spot to share a late afternoon treat.

Timing a visit around lunchtime or early dinner tends to work best to catch freshly made banh mi sandwiches and hot deep-fried snacks at their peak. While the space likely welcomes a steady trickle of takeaway orders during busier times, there’s still space to sit and enjoy food at a pace that suits you without feeling rushed.

Ultimately, V BANHMI caters well to anyone looking to explore beyond standard Vietnamese sandwiches into a mix of Asian street food and dessert. Nepean locals looking for a friendly place with both familiar and new flavor combinations—especially fans of fresh fruit desserts and casual, quick bites—will find this spot fits nicely into a weekday or weekend outing.

Sugar marmalade is a dessert place with some wonderfully curated dishes. We had Mango pancake with Sundae supreme, fusion fries with Kimchi, Fresh mango with pearl delight and fusion chicken popcorn. Food was delicious and service was exceptional. Will definitely go to this place again. Loved it!!

I had zero expectations when I entered this place but it turned out amazing! The waiter was super sweet and the food came fast. The curry French fries were delicious and the two sweet dishes we got were perfectly done. I would come back again for sure

We had been to the Sugar Marmalade downtown before, so this V BANHMI was a welcome addition to Marketplace's cornucopia of restaurants. Though they're named after banh mi, they have a lot more, including desserts like shaved ice that you can't really find elsewhere in Ottawa. They've got enough good food options to make coming back to try different things enticing, but they also have great customer service: we showed up an hour before closing time and still got full service from the staff even after closing time.

Photo depicts halved bahn mi. I’m a bahn mi lover so I was excited to try this new spot. I got the vegan ham for takeout and it was super tasty and fresh for a such reasonable price that you can basically get nowhere nowadays. Sandwich wasn’t huge, so consider two if you have a big appetite, but one was good for me. The sever was knowledgeable about what was and wasn’t vegan so I felt sure I was getting what I asked for. I am definitely planning on returning!

You have to try the original banhmi sandwich. My goodness, it's delicious . The bread is perfect, the taste is absolutely beautiful, and the ingredients are so fresh. I would recommend getting two just because you won't want to stop eating. Heck, get one of each option, but make sure you have extra for later because at 3am you'll wake up thinking about this sandwich.

What a hidden gem!!!! My wife and I were out and about looking for something for lunch and we were not in the mood for the standard fare. No burgers, no sushi, no shawarma, no fried anything...we wanted something fresh, tasty and good. We saw the little sign tucked in the corner of the strip mall in Barrhaven's Riocan Plaza and thought it might have been new as we'd never noticed it before (apparently it's been there for a few years). "We'll give it a try." we thought and wow were we glad we did! Clean and fresh smelling when you walk in and a sublte aroma of a grill and some caramelised sauce is the welcome you get. Pleasant staff with a smile and hello was the start to a simple but great experience. We sat at a booth and looked through the menu. A few picture boards with menu items adorn the walls which is really cool and trust me that banh mi is not at all what they are limited to! We chose a BBQ pork and a grilled chicken banh mi each with grill sauce (due to a mushroom allergy) fully adorned with the veggies and a ginseng and chicken soup. Our server was really smart to confirm that we had tried ginseng soup before so as to ensure we knew the flavour it had. Very smart as some may not know and be confused as ginseng is not a normal soup flavour. The food came quickly and was hot and exploding with flavour. The soup was bright and deep and slightly sweet and perfect for a chilly day (-18C) and the sandiches were even better. Plenty of tender meat with a sweet salty umami rich sauce atop of fresh crunchy bright veggies in a grilled bun. I'm drooling typing this as I want more right now! hahaha Such a great and perfectly balanced sandwich and only $8!! Go here! Eat here! You'll likely see us there as this little hidden gem is now on our must go to list for when we want really good food in Barrhaven (or elsewhere for that matter!).
